EVASIVE AND DEFENSIVE DRIVING - VIP PROTECTION
FORD MONDEO
Test Track: Driving Standards Agency (DSA), Bedfordshire. 15th July 1998 Vehicle fitted with Tyron wheel safety bands.
This vehicle completed a high speed 'J' Turn (reverse spin) with the offside (loaded) tyre blown mid-spin. It completed the complete defensive driver training course, including 'Y' Turns, handbrake turns, fast cornering, acceleration and stops, without the tyre being stripped from the rim and with the driver able to maintain complete control throughout. Tyron bands are used extensively on vehicles where, for example, there is a risk of ambush or terrorist attack, or when high risk personnel are being carried. Training establishments (for example, the Army School of Mechanical Engineering) fit Tyron bands as a matter of necessity prior to carrying out evasive and defensive driver training.
ROLLS ROYCE SILVER SPUR
Test Track: Driving Standards Agency (DSA), Bedfordshire. 15th July 1998 Vehicle fitted with Tyron Extended Runflat System 'Standard' system.
Following extensive testing with Rolls Royce/Bentley at the Millbrook Proving ground, Bedfordshire, this demonstration provided governmental, embassy and organisations involved in transportation of high risk staff, the opportunity to see a heavy car driven through a high speed 'blowout' (front tyre) and pursuit scenario, followed by 25km runflat. The driver maintained complete control throughout and on completion there was no damage to the tyre visible to the eye. (As in most runflat applications, the tyre would not have been safely re-useable).
